The timer starts at 35 minutes for English. Press the Time button to switch to 50 or 40 minutes for the other sections.
How to use the ACT Timer
- Choose the section you are practising and set the matching time: English 35, Math 50, Reading 40, Science 40.
- Press start and work through the section without pausing.
- Note where you were when time ran out, then finish the remaining questions untimed for review.
ACT section timing
English: 35 minutes, 50 questions. Math: 50 minutes, 45 questions. Reading: 40 minutes, 36 questions. Science (optional): 40 minutes, 40 questions. The ACT changed its format in 2025, so older prep books may list longer sections. Always confirm the latest timing on the official ACT website.
Pacing tips
Divide the time by the number of questions to find your target pace, which is roughly 40 seconds per English question and about a minute per Math question. If a question takes twice your target, guess, mark it and move on. You get the same credit for an easy question as for a hard one.
